Potsdam is small enough that almost every hotel puts you within walking or tram distance of the old town. Visitors usually choose between three zones: the historic centre, where the sightseeing is; the area around Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and the Havel, which is the practical choice for transport; and Babelsberg in the south, quieter and closer to the film studios and the park. Berlin is 25 minutes away by train, which makes Potsdam a genuine alternative base for a Berlin trip.
If you want to walk out of the door into the postcard, stay in the centre. Hotel Brandenburger Tor on the Brandenburger Strasse 1, Hotel Walhalla on Dortustrasse 5 and Altstadt Hotel on Dortustrasse 9 are all inside the pedestrian core, minutes from the Dutch Quarter. Hotel am Jägertor on Hegelallee 11 and Hotel am Grossen Waisenhaus on Lindenstrasse 29 sit just outside it, quieter, still walkable. At the top end, Dorint Sanssouci on Jägerallee 20 is the largest and most resort-like of the central options.
For an early train or a late arrival, the station side wins. Holiday Inn Express on Am Kanal 15 and Hotel am Luisenplatz at Luisenplatz 5 put you between the centre and the platforms. Along the Havel, Hotel am Havelufer on Zeppelinstrasse 136 trades the centre for water views and easier parking, while Hotel garni Am Katharinenholz on Amundsenstrasse serves the northern edge.
Babelsberg is the second centre of the city and a good base if you are visiting the film park or travelling by car. FRITZ Aparthotel on Weberplatz, Ambassador on Lessingstrasse, Anno 1900 Hotel Babelsberg on Stahnsdorfer Strasse and Apart Pension Babelsberg on August-Bier-Strasse cover the range, and Hampton by Hilton and B&B Hotel on Babelsberger Strasse add the reliable chains. Filmhotel Lili Marleen on Grossbeerenstrasse 75a is the characterful one, with the film history to match its name.
Weekends and the summer months fill early, especially the small houses in the centre, so book ahead if you are tied to dates. Almost everything listed is within a short tram ride of the Hauptbahnhof, and the WelcomeCard covers local transport. Parking in the old town is limited and expensive; hotels on the edges are the better bet if you arrive by car. Breakfast is usually included in the mid-range houses and charged separately in the chains.
The list below is built from open map data. Sort by the district you want and treat walking distance to the tram as the deciding factor.
